Tables, graphs, and histograms in nursing essay

Tables, graphs, and histograms in nursing essay

This week’s content focused on a variety of formats for presenting data. Key points for creating and appropriately using tables, graphs, and histograms were discussed. Based on the information you reviewed answer the following discussion prompts.

1. Discuss the most common errors that occur when using tables, graphs, and histograms to present data.

2. Identify two measures one can take to prevent such errors from occurring.

3. Suggest two different formats the DNP clinicians in the case study may use to present the outcomes of the project. Clearly discuss the suggested format and corresponding data point(s).

4. Identify one format you would use to present each outcome of your EBP project. (You only need one if you have one outcome, two if you have two outcomes, etc.) (Hint: you will use this information in your related MSN courses).

  1. Discuss the most common errors that occur when using tables, graphs, and histograms to present data.

There are three common errors that occur when using visualization to present data. The first error is when the numbers do not add up, such as a pie-chart presenting 150% instead of 100%. This is typically caused by using a survey that presents more than one response with a pie chart being the wrong tool for presenting the results. The second mistake is not following convention, such as having an upside-down y-axis with zero at the top and maximum values at the bottom. The third mistake is using truncated and cropped axes that make it difficult to compare values (Sharma, 2015) Tables, graphs, and histograms in nursing essay.

  1. Identify two measures one can take to prevent such errors from occurring.

The first error (numbers not adding up) can be addressed through using the right chart and double checking the numbers to ensure that the correct values have been entered. The second error (not following convention) can be addressed through following convention as a rule. This does not mean that not following convention is prohibited. Not following convention should be the exception rather than the rule. The third error is truncated and cropped axes that should be prevented through using the axes with the true values. Alternatively, the axes can be presented with the braid view first then changed to a detailed view with truncated axes in the next graph to highlight the information (Sharma, 2015).

  1. Suggest two different formats the DNP clinicians in the case study may use to present the outcomes of the project. Clearly discuss the suggested format and corresponding data point(s).

The two strategies for presenting outcomes of the case study project are an article and a poster. Firstly, an article follows a scientific format with structured sections that take readers through a logical thought process from a position of unknown to known. It begins with an introduction, moves to a literature review, methodology, data presentation, discussion, conclusion, references and appendices. This approach helps in presenting enough information to facilitate duplication efforts, and offering information in a format that is easy to retrieve (Joel, 2018). Secondly, a posted would be used to present the information. Unlike an article, a poster is intended to offer brief and visually appealing information Tables, graphs, and histograms in nursing essay. Using a poster would help in summarizing the project outcomes attractively and concisely to generate publicity and discussion among the medical community (Joel, 2018).

  1. Identify one format you would use to present each outcome of your EBP project.

An article would be preferable for presenting the project results. That is because it contains comprehensive information that lends itself to peer review to verify the information. This lends credibility to the EBP project (Joel, 2018). Tables, graphs, and histograms in nursing essay.
